It’s been a month since Onyx Storm hit shelves, and while I’ve seen my fair share of criticism, I have to say—I really enjoyed it. Rebecca Yarros knows how to craft an addictive story, and this installment delivered the kind of high-stakes action and emotional gut punches that kept me hooked.
I’m a child of the Harry Potter generation who now loves me a romantasy, and Onyx Storm reminds me exactly why. I can see how my tastes have grown over the years, shifting from pure fantasy to this perfect blend of magic, romance, and high stakes. Rebecca vYarros writes on a W, so I know we’re in for some serious turbulence, and I’m absolutely terrified for where this series is heading.
What I found especially interesting in this book was how the world is presented. You know what Violet does—you’re inside her head, seeing the world exactly as she does, with all its uncertainties and shifting alliances. It adds this layer of tension where you’re never quite sure who to trust or what’s coming next. The pacing was relentless, making it nearly impossible to put down.
I also have to shout out the beautiful Hachette Australia edition with sprayed edges. That’s a trend I absolutely love for readers now—it makes collecting books feel even more special.
I still think that her contemporaries are her strongest, but this series is carving out its own space in the romantasy world. It’s a rollicking read, and no matter how terrifying it gets, I’m strapped in for the ride.
