Let me tell you about the book that gave me my first real introduction to the term Himbo: Good Boy by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy. Blake Riley is the epitome of a Himbo—hot, sweet, and hilariously over the top. I’ll admit, I found him a bit unrealistic at times, but honestly? I didn’t care. He’s just so lovable that it works.
This book is packed with humor, and I laughed out loud more times than I can count. Blake’s chaotic, golden-retriever energy is completely infectious, and it’s impossible not to smile when he’s on the page. His dynamic with Jess is what makes this story shine. Jess is a mess of imposter syndrome, which, hi, same. I felt so seen in her character—the doubt, the need to prove herself, the fear of not being enough. She’s relatable in a way that grounds the book, even as Blake’s antics keep things light and ridiculous in the best way.
And yet, for all the laughs, this book also sneaks in some serious themes about figuring out what you want in life, dealing with family expectations, and learning to stand on your own two feet. But…it doesn’t linger too long in the heavy stuff, because Blake’s there to keep everything upbeat. It’s a balance that works beautifully, and it’s part of what makes this book such a joy to read.
Also, can we talk about the dogs? This book has some serious puppy energy, and by the end, I was Googling the RSPCA for a rescue dog. I desperately want one now. You know you’re rollicking along with a good story when it leaves you both laughing and seriously reconsidering your pet situation.
While it’s technically a spin-off from Him and Us, you don’t have to read those to enjoy it—but trust me, you’ll want to. And if you’ve already met Blake in the earlier books, this is where he truly shines. Sure, he’s larger than life, but that’s what makes him unforgettable.
Good Boy is the perfect feel-good read—funny, heartwarming, and with just enough weight to keep it from being fluff. It’s a book that makes you laugh, leaves you smiling, and, if you’re like me, has you daydreaming about adopting a rescue dog.
