Quicksilver by Callie Hart

For someone who claims not to like fantasy, I’ve realised I read a lot of it—especially romantasy. In fact, I think I’ve read more romantasy this year than ever before, and Quicksilver, book one in the Fae & Alchemy #1, by Callie Hart is definitely one of the standouts. It’s a dark, gripping mix of human, fae, and vampire worlds, centered around Saeris Fane, a heroine who’s tough, flawed, and utterly compelling.

Saeris is pulled into a dangerous game she doesn’t fully understand, caught between her own survival and forces that seem to be playing by their own rules. Opposite her is Kingfisher, the mysterious and brooding male lead. Admittedly, I was skeptical about his name—what kind of a name is Kingfisher? But as the story unfolded and the Arthurian legend connections emerged, I found myself intrigued despite my initial doubts. Their dynamic is full of tension, mistrust, and the kind of slow-burn connection that keeps you hooked.

What sets Quicksilver apart is its unapologetic tone and its balance of supernatural danger with raw human emotion. There’s a looming “big bad” (hello, Buffy vibes) pulling the strings, and the stakes are high enough to make every choice feel vital. It’s dark, dramatic, and exactly the kind of romantasy that keeps you turning pages.

Fair warning, though—this is not a standalone. It ends with so many unanswered questions that I’m still trying to piece together what comes next. Originally, the second book was meant to release in October 2024, but with it now picked up by a traditional publisher, we’re waiting until 2025. On the bright side, there’s been a Netflix deal, so we can expect to see Quicksilver on screen—which I’m fully here for.

If you’re into stories where human and supernatural worlds collide, characters are flawed but fascinating, and Arthurian legend gets a fresh twist, Quicksilver is one to add to your list. Just be prepared to join me in the long wait for the sequel.
