Karina Halle’s River of Shadows swept me into a dark, atmospheric world steeped in Finnish mythology—a realm I barely knew existed before picking up this book. It’s the first in a four-book series (three of which are already out, with the finale expected this December), and it deftly blends adventure, romance, and mythology. I couldn’t put it down. Halle’s writing style, which I’ve always appreciated, truly shines here as she crafts a tale that feels equal parts epic and intimate.
The story’s mythological underpinnings intrigued me deeply. Finnish gods are an entirely new area for me, and River of Shadows has sparked a desire to learn more about them. While Norse mythology often takes the spotlight in popular media, Halle’s focus on Finnish lore was refreshing and added a unique edge to the narrative.
Beyond the mythology, the setting struck a personal chord. Earlier this year, I flew Finnair to Germany, with a layover in Helsinki. Sadly, I didn’t get to leave the airport—a decision I now regret even more. Halle’s vivid descriptions of Finnish culture and the stark beauty of her imagined underworld made me wish I’d taken the time to explore. Even the small cultural touches reminded me of the experience, like Finnair’s gorgeous blueberry juice—a detail that now feels like a missed opportunity to connect more with Finland’s unique charm.
This book has also pushed me toward more Norse-style reads, reigniting my fascination with mythological fantasy. If you’re looking for a book that feels like stepping into another world—complete with shadowy gods, high stakes, and a touch of romance—River of Shadows is a must-read.
With the final book in the four part series releasing next month, now’s the perfect time to dive in. Have you delved into Finnish mythology, or do you have a favourite myth-inspired novel? Let me know—I’m eager to keep this blogging streak alive!
